संविधान ने भारत में प्रत्यक्ष प्रजातंत्र या प्रतिनिधि शासन की स्थापना की है। अतः संसद व विधानसभाओं के सर्वाधिक चुनाव होते हैं। जिनमें अनेक पार्टियां भाग लेती है तथा सफलता पाकर सत्ता में आ सकती है।
1952 में पहला आम चुनाव हुआ यह चुनाव अ ,ब, स के राज्यों में हुआ भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस ने इन चुनावों में विशाल सफलता प्राप्त की।
1956 में राज्यों का पुनर्गठन हो गया । अब 14 राज्यों में चुनाव हुआ। भारत के निर्वाचन आयोग के अधिकार क्षेत्र में जम्मू-कश्मीर भी आ गया।
1960 में मुंबई राज्य का एक भाग कटकर गुजरात बना। मुंबई का नाम महाराष्ट्र हो गया ।
अब 15 राज्य में चुनाव हुआ जम्मू कश्मीर में नेशनल कांफ्रेंस सत्ता में रही ।
लेकिन केरल में कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी को सरकार बनाने का अवसर मिला।
ग्रामीण हो या नगरी, उद्योगपति हो या श्रमिक ,भूमिपति हो या कृषक, सभी को इसकी सदस्यता प्राप्त हो सकती है, तथा इस पार्टी के भीतर रहकर सभी अपने- अपने हितों की रक्षा कर सकते हैं ।
इसी को कांग्रेस की मिली-जुली प्रकृति कहते हैं ।
देश में अनेक पार्टियां हैं जो प्रतिपक्ष बनाती है कुछ दाम्पथी पार्टियां हैं । जैसे -भारतीय जनसंघ , स्वतंत्र पार्टी ,तो कुछ वामपंथी संगठन है ।
जैसे- कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी ,मार्क्सवादी कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी ,जनता पार्टी, जनता दल, आदि ।
विचारधारा की दृष्टि से कांग्रेस निष्पक्ष पार्टी है । इसीलिए कांग्रेस को वाम की ओर झुकी केंद्रीय पार्टी कहा गया है।

The Constitution has established direct democracy or representative rule in India. Hence, most elections are held in Parliament and Legislative Assemblies. In which many parties participate and can succeed and come to power.
The first general election was held in 1952, this election was held in the states of A, B, C. The Indian National Congress achieved huge success in these elections.
States were reorganized in 1956. Now elections were held in 14 states. Jammu and Kashmir also came under the jurisdiction of Election Commission of India.
In 1960, Gujarat became a part of the state of Mumbai. Mumbai became Maharashtra.
Now elections were held in 15 states and the National Conference remained in power in Jammu and Kashmir.
But the Communist Party had the opportunity to form a government in Kerala.
Nevertheless, the Congress dominated position. The Congress is not dependent on any particular ideology. Within it are people of all religions, classes, castes, regions, languages, etc. Who have diverse interests.
Whether rural or urban, industrialist or laborer, landlord or farmer, all can get its membership, and all can protect their interests by staying within this party.
This is called the mixed nature of the Congress.
There are many parties in the country that make up the opposition, some are couple parties. Like - Bharatiya Jan Sangh, Swatantra Party, there are some leftist organizations.
Such as - Communist Party, Communist Party of Marxist, Janata Party, Janata Dal, etc.
In terms of ideology, Congress is a neutral party. That is why the Congress has been called the central party leaning towards the left.
